What is the colon?

The colon, or large intestine, is the end portion of the human digestive tract.  For more information, please visit this Wikipedia article: The Colon.

What is Colon Hydrotherapy?

Colon hydrotherapy is a method of removing waste from the large intestine without the use of drugs.  By introducing filtered water into the colon, the waste is softened and loosened, resulting in
evacuation through natural peristalsis.

Why should I be concerned about my colon?

The colon has been referred to as the sewer system of the body.  It is the place where we store the waste material that most of us would rather not think about.  A healthy colon produces Vitamins B
and K, and absorbs water.  A healthy digestive tract helps support a healthy immune system.

Why should I have a colonic?

Over time, waste materials – especially substances that remain in the colon for a long time –
can pose numerous health issues.  These substances include impacted feces, dead cellular tissue, accumulated mucous, parasites, etc.  Accumulation of these materials leads to toxicity.
These toxins can reenter the colon and ultimately circulate into our bloodstream, making us feel ill, tired and weak.

Also, impacted materials impair the colon's ability to assimilate minerals and bacteria produced vitamins.  Buildup of material on the colon wall can also inhibit muscular action, causing sluggish bowel movements and constipation

Should I see my doctor before my first colon hydrotherapy session?

If you have concerns about your health – or the appropriateness of colon hydrotherapy – you should consult your general practitioner prior to a session.  If you have been diagnosed with diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, severe hemorrhoids; or rectal or intestinal tumors, you would
not be a candidate for colon hydrotherapy treatments.  A more detailed list of contraindications
will be covered during your initial consultation.  If you are free from the above listed conditions, a medical examination prior to therapy should not be necessary.

What is a Colon Hydrotherapy session like?

Your initial visit will include a brief consultation with a certified therapist.  We will also ask you a few simple questions as part of our intake process.

A session is a comfortable experience for most people, however, if discomfort is experienced, the session can be stopped at any time.  Techniques utilized allow a small amount of water to flow into the colon, gently stimulating the colon’s natural peristaltic action to release softened waste.  The inflow of a small amount of water and the release of waste may be repeated several times.  The removal of waste should encourage better colon function and elimination.

During the session, most clothing can be kept on and you will be draped, or a gown might be worn to ensure modesty.  Your dignity is always maintained.

How long will my treatment take?

Actual treatment time is approximately 45 minutes, but you should plan for about an hour (allow a bit more time in your schedule for your first visit.

bullet

Will my session be painful?

No.  Colon cleansing is a gentle, pain-free process.  Most of our clients find the experience to be relaxing and refreshing.

bullet

Will I experience any discomfort or fatigue after the cleansing?

Typically, you should not experience discomfort or fatigue after your cleansing.  However, a cleansing is a positive step toward detoxifying your body, so it is possible that you might experience some
minor nausea or fatigue following your cleansing (as your body adjusts and rids itself of toxins.)

How many sessions will I need?

The number of colon hydrotherapy sessions desired will depend on the individual.  Every person’s goals will differ.  Just as some people exercise on a daily or weekly basis to tone and tighten their outer body, some people also have their own ongoing cleansing, toning and rebuilding regiment for their inner body.  Colon hydrotherapy could be used as part of any regular maintenance program.

Sanitation and Safety

The cleansing process is safe and very gentle.  Modern colon irrigation equipment is manufactured through compliance with strict federal guidelines.  Visceral Vitality utilizes LIBBE (the LIBBE is an FDA registered Class II medical device for colon hydrotherapy.)  The LIBBE system allows us to offer our clients sanitary, odor-free and comfortable colonic cleansing.  Furthermore, our system utilizes disposable cleansing nozzles and tubing, so our clients can rest assured that their sessions are safe and clean.  Our colonic cleansing process is more gentle than a common enema!

Will colonic hydrotherapy upset the natural balance of bacteria and
flora in my colon?

Lately, a lot of attention has been given to the benefits of acidophilus and the naturally occurring bacteria and flora in our intestines.  Colon hydrotherapy does wash out beneficial and non-beneficial (toxic) bacteria from the colon.  However, a healthy diet rich in foods like yogurt will help maintain the balance.

Cautions & Recommendations

Colon irrigation may not be for everyone.  Every client consults with a Certified Hydrocolonic Therapist for evaluation prior to a colon hydrotherapy session.  The benefits and contraindications of colon hydrotherapy will be discussed during the initial consultation.

bullet

Will my insurance cover a colonic procedure?

We do not bill insurance directly.  However, we are working with area physicians through referral, wherein your procedure may be billed through your care provider.  We will make every effort to supply you with the necessary documentation if you wish to submit a claim on your own.

bullet

Is colon hydrotherapy treatment like getting an enema?

No.  An enema only reaches the rectum and lower part of the colon.  Our colon hydrotherapy
process irrigates and cleanses the entire length of the colon.  Furthermore, enemas generally use higher pressure than our process (traditional enemas can lead to spasm in the colon, which can cause discomfort.)  Colon hydrotherapy utilizes low pressures and water temperatures are carefully controlled, leading to a more comfortable and effective cleansing.

bullet

Can hydrocolonic therapy alleviate constipation?

As part of a well-balanced health regimen, colonic hydrotherapy can aid in regulating digestive function.  The process of colonic hydrotherapy is excellent for cleansing and healing the colon sufficiently so that changes in diet, exercise, and attitude are then able to produce positive outcomes.  Many people find the relief provided by colonics stimulates the motivation and enthusiasm to institute positive changes in their lifestyle.
